UE avoids late collapse to beat UST, complete Final Four cast

The University of the East Red Warriors pulled off an 89-87 victory over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers Sunday, a win that completed the semifinal cast of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament.

But the Warriors took this one on the edge.

They saw a 24-point lead in the third whittled down to 88-87 with 37.6 seconds to go in the game.

In that span, UE point-guard Paul Zamar split his free throws to make it 89-87 and UST missed three attempts from three-point range that sealed the Warriors’ eighth win in 13 games.

The victory safely pushed UE into the semis while it ousted UST (5-8).

Ateneo is currently at first place with a 12-1 record followed by De La Salle and Far Eastern University, which both have 10-3 cards, and then UE (8-5).

Ateneo will bring a twice-to-beat advantage versus UE in their semifinal meeting.

La Salle and FEU will settle which one between them will have the twice-to-beat advantage when they meet separate foes in the tournament’s last playdates. – GMANews.TV
